What is Crib 5 Compliance? - Nimbus Beds

When we talk about CRIB 5 or Ignition Source 5 furniture or furnishings, including beds and mattresses, we are referring to the fire safety level of the materials, all of which have to be tested and passed UK Fire Regulations 1988 compliance assessments. The tests carried out do not make an item entirely fireproof, but dramatically reduces the risk of ignition which could potentially save lives.

Each of the following businesses require Crib 5 / Ignition Source 5 treated products and therefore must use ‘contract’ mattresses and beds when designing and furnishing their establishments:

  • Hotels
  • Guest Houses
  • Bed and Breakfasts
  • Educational Establishments
  • Holiday Parks
  • Caravan Parks
  • Holiday Lettings
  • Youth Hostels
  • Universities
  • Health Care Sector (Hospitals and Care Homes)

To buy a mattress or bed for commercial use, the product must comply with specific UK Fire Regulations, including having the following accreditations:

  • BS EN597-1 (Cigarette)
  • BS EN597-2 (Match)
  • BS7177:2008 Source 5 - Medium Hazard (Crib 5)

It is an offence to use contract mattresses and contract beds that have not met BS7177 standards for commercial use under Government Legislation (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1988/1324/contents/made)

Failure to use a product that does not meet the minimum requirements could lead to prosecution in the event of a fire and invalidate your insurance, so you must always check that your products are safe to use and fit for purpose.
